Tooth Replacement with Dental Implants

You have no doubt heard about dental implants if you have been researching solutions for one or more missing teeth. Dr. Charles Capra places and restores dental implants in the comfort of our Phenix City dental office.

At Complete Family Dental, our goal is to prevent tooth loss whenever possible. If teeth are missing, we generally recommend that they be replaced with a prosthetic appliance (such as a dental implant) to avoid further problems.

Why replace missing teeth?

With the exception of wisdom teeth, when a permanent tooth is lost due to decay or an accident, this causes a negative impact on the patient's dental health. As the patient continues to bite and chew, adjacent and opposing teeth shift and move into the open space left by the missing tooth.

Tooth loss can initiate a progressive breakdown process; without a functional replacement, eventually other teeth will be broken or become loose, with the risk of additional tooth loss. In most cases this deterioration is further complicated by reduced jaw bone levels due to an unstable bite.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small cylinder made of titanium (or a combination of titanium alloys and ceramics) that is surgically inserted into the space left by a missing tooth. The dental implant serves as a foundation for a dental restoration such as a crown or bridge, or, as an anchor for a partial or complete denture.

Dr. Capra may recommend placement of one or more dental implants based on the number and location of missing teeth to be replaced. Dental implants are designed to integrate with the jaw bone to provide retention for the crown, bridge or denture. They also stimulate the circulatory and healing process in the jaw bone to help maintain oral health.

Are you a candidate for a dental implant?

A functional dental implant can provide years of service for a patient, and help minimize or avoid additional complications related to tooth loss.
